Mayor on Wednesday Eric Garcetti announced that Safe Emergency Aid for Vulnerable Workers (SERVE) will provide cash from the Los Angeles Mayor’s Nonprofit Fund to 4,000 workers. This includes employees from restaurants, breweries, and food stalls.
California continues to fight the coronavirus pandemic. Last week, Governor Gavin Newsom issued a new stay at home order, and on Wednesday Los Angeles County reported over 8,000 patients hospitalized with the virus and 40 new deaths. The new report restricted eating indoors.
To counteract the financial burden on the food industry, SERVE has decided to respond with the $ 800 scholarship. According to the mayor, 4 out of 10 food workers have lost their jobs, the Los Angeles Times reported.
“With outdoor dining exposure in our restaurants, losses are increasing for workers and business owners in the industry,” Garcetti said. “I heard the pain in the voices of our service staff and our restaurant owners.”
If you or someone you know is interested in a scholarship, residents are eligible if they are 18 years of age or older and have an income of $ 58,450 or less in 2019. Application for the initiative starts on Monday.
