We visit John Pawson and Ian Schrager’s most recent collaboration in West Hollywood
Edition Hotels designed by John Pawson and Ian Schrager’s newest offering, The Residences at the West Hollywood Edition, combine Los Angeles lifestyle and contemporary design
Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood has seen a hotel and construction boom in recent years, but no more was expected than this partnership with hotelier Ian Schrager and the architecture studio of John Pawson. While there is a full-service hotel on the premises, real estate developers Witkoff and New Valley round off the dream team’s latest collaboration by enabling a stay in this fabled area right on the famous Strip.
“Finding West Hollywood in Ed Ruscha’s photographic art in every building on the Sunset Strip was an early moment to remember,” said Pawson. “One phrase Ian used over and over again when talking about the assignment was“ gritty sophistication. ”In the way they combine the raw and the refined, the repetitive screens and natural textures that make up one capture it One of the hallmarks of West Hollywood design is the conflicting energies that Ian identified as such a defining aspect of the Sunset Strip. ‘
To this end, the private living lobby connects to the main hotel and a mobile piece of art by Sterling Ruby that incorporates elements from previous incarnations of the place – an oil barrel and pan represent the former gas station and Scandia restaurant where Frank Sinatra returned on the day .
Home amenities and amenities include a full-time concierge and pool. The 190-room hotel (in partnership with Marriott International) also has a signature restaurant, basement club, and second rooftop pool, as well as meeting rooms, a spa, and fitness center, but you may not want to leave your personal home.
The twenty luxury residences offer expansive views of the hills and the city skyline and offer a perfect balance between indoor and outdoor areas. Pawson brings in the outside with custom automatic sliding glass panels that open to expansive private patios. Other polished design elements include white oiled oak floors, Molteni kitchens with custom teak mills, a 1,200-pound freestanding concrete bathtub in the main bathroom, and bespoke lighting throughout.
Pawson adds, “Another highlight for me is the sense of calm that you get when you arrive in the garden, so close to the hectic life of the Sunset Strip.”
Pawson also used travertine, flamed cedar, and the bronze colored screens as important exterior elements. “The travertine we used in West Hollywood comes from the Tivoli quarries in central Italy. When test sections of the unfilled stone were made, the result was such beautiful porosity that we decided not to fill the stone joints either. ‘
