LA Galaxy purchase D Jorge Villafana from Timbers

The Los Angeles Galaxy took over veteran defender Jorge Villafana from the Portland Timbers on Tuesday.

LA also received the Timbers’ 2021 draft pick for the first round (16th overall) in exchange for the Galaxy’s first classic (# 8 overall). Portland could also receive additional allotment money based on Villafana’s unspecified future performance.

“Jorge is a talented defender with many years of high-level experience in Major League Soccer,” said Dennis te Kloese, Galaxy general manager, in a press release. “We are confident that he can make a contribution to our club on the field, in our locker room and in our community. We look forward to welcoming Jorge at home and welcoming him to our club.”

The 31-year-old Villafana has scored 10 goals and 24 assists in 188 career appearances in the MLS at Chivas USA (2007-13) and the Timbers (2014-15, 2018-20).

The product from Anaheim, California, had one goal and five assists in 19 games (17 starts) in 2020. He ranks fifth in the history of Portland for assists (18) and ninth place (102) for appearances.
