LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – A father has died and his teenage son remains in critical condition after both were rescued from a house fire in south Los Angeles early Monday morning.
December 7, 2020 (LAFD)
The fire broke out on the 1400 block on East 55th Street before 4:30 a.m.
Los Angeles Fire Department crews arrived to find a one-story house on fire. A 40-year-old man was trapped in one of the bedrooms. The man’s 18-year-old son was also found badly burned outside the home.
Both were rescued and taken to local hospitals. The father later died of his injuries, reported the fire department. The son was in critical condition with burns but was supposed to survive. No names were published.
Two other people who lived in the apartment were not injured: the surviving teenager’s grandfather and the teenager’s brother. The grandfather had been made aware of the fire by a smoke alarm and had tried to fight the flames with a garden hose, reported the fire department.
It took firefighters about 25 minutes to get the fire under control.
The cause is being investigated.
