The Architecture and Design Museum (A + D), Archinect and DnA: Design and Architecture from KCRW come for SHORTLISTED! Together, a one day symposium on the current state of earning, placing and evaluating architectural contracts in Los Angeles.

Designed in conjunction with the Los Angeles Schools exhibition at A + D, the event features headlines from Dr. Lori Bettison-Varga, director of Los Angeles County’s natural history museums; and Christopher Hawthorne, chief design officer and former director of LA architecture critic for the Los Angeles Times.

Made at a time of upheaval around Los Angeles’ major cultural institutions – including the demolition and rebuilding of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) complex, proposals to expand the La Brea tar pits, and plans for a new wing of the Natural History Museum, amid several high profile expansions and reorientations taking shape – the event will bring architects, cultural professionals, educators and media together to discuss how these transformative proposals are shaped.

Topics covered include tapping into design talent from around the world amid LA’s growing sense of critical regionalism. What can architects do to make the cut for these career and culture-defining projects? Philanthropy and procurement; cultural, political and community leadership; and the role of local architecture schools and media in creating our museums and civic landmarks.

The event takes place on Saturday, November 16 at the Museum of Architecture and Design in Los Angeles.

In addition to Hawthorne and Dr. Bettison Varga also the Director / CEO of SCI-Arc, Hernan Diaz Alonso, Frederick Fisher, Founder of Fredrick Fisher and Partners; David Pakshong, Design Principal at Gensler; Elizabeth Timme, co-executive director of LA-Más; Dean Ingalill Wahlroos-Ritter from Woodbury University School of Architecture and, among others, the curator and critic Mimi Zeiger.

The forum was stimulated in part by realizing that no LA architects had made the cut for any of the recent building redesigns along the city’s famous museum suite, which includes LACMA, the Tar Bits and the Petersen Automotive Museum.

“The spirit of Los Angeles is open, cosmopolitan and inviting,” the organizers explain in a press release, adding: “However, we would like to ask how architects who work, teach and study in this epicenter of innovation leave their mark on buildings, that define contemporary culture. We want to discuss this in the context of architectural language and whether there is an argument to promote contemporary regionalism in our rapidly globalizing cities. “

The shortlist! is co-produced and moderated by Anthony Morey, Executive Director of the A + D Museum, the editor-in-chief of Archinect, Antonio Pacheco, architecture designer and SCI-Arc trainer Rebecca Fitzgerald, and Frances Anderton, presenter of KCRW’s DnA: Design and Architecture .

The forum is free and open to everyone.
