6 open homes to take a look at this weekend in Los Angeles

Welcome to the first in a new weekly series that brings together open houses for the weekend. This prime episode focuses on a wide variety of properties designed by renowned architects, because who doesn’t like having a little real estate (and design) gawking?

This two-story post-and-beam in the Hollywood Hills was built in 1949 for Millard Kaufman, an Oscar-nominated screenwriter and co-creator of the cartoon character Mr. Magoo, and his wife Lorraine. Three top modernists – Richard Neutra, Alexander Ban and Josef Van Der Kar – played a role in the design and expansion of the house. The site was planned by the renowned landscape architect Garrett Eckbo.

The 2,503 square meter house was thoroughly renovated in 2018 and has four bedrooms, three bathrooms, wood beam ceilings, multiple skylights, wood and concrete floors and glass walls. It is listed on Compass’ Mark Meyer and Sophie Marquart at a price of $ 2.999 million.

Oscar-winning animator Ub Iwerks, who worked with Walt Disney to create the Mickey Mouse character, commissioned John Lautner to design this football-shaped house in Sherman Oaks in 1958. However, due to differences of opinion between the client and the modernist architect, Lautner resigned from the completion of his work for his draftsman, Taliesin West student James Charlton.

Set in a lush tropical setting at the end of a private drive, the striking four bedroom residence has ample glass, concrete, and bamboo floors, along with original hardware, lighting, and built-in wardrobes. It is listed on Keith Fisher of Berkshire Hathaway for a price of $ 2.279 million.

The historic-cultural monument No. 130 in Los Angeles, the Samuel Novarro House, was designed in 1928 by Lloyd Wright for the talent agent Louis Samuel, who sold it to the screen idol Ramon Navarro. An icon in the Los Feliz Oaks, the 266-square-foot Mayan-influenced residence features concrete floors, casement windows with steel bands, built-ins, and accents of oxidized copper. It is listed on Compass’ Marc Silver and Barry Sloane at a price of $ 4.195 million.

This Tarzana house is in the valley area known as the Corbin Palms. It was designed in 1955 by the influential Palmer and Krisel partnership. It is located on 0.37 acre property and has four bedrooms, three bathrooms, wood beam ceilings and original wood parquet floors, a large swimming pool and a detached studio. The updated residence is listed on Redfin’s Craig Terrien at a price of $ 898,000.

The architects Gary L. Scherquist and James C. Moore designed this neat residential complex in Brentwood in 1981. The building consists of five units, one of which has just been listed by the longtime owner, founding member of the Architecture + Design Museum, Ann Videriksen. It measures 1,903 square meters and has two bedrooms and three bathrooms. Features include cork floors, high ceilings, built-ins, two fireplaces, French doors, and several private outdoor areas. The device is listed with Brian Linder and Rick Grahn of Compass at a price of $ 1.299 million.

Fairhaven was built in the early 1960s and was the first of three areas developed by Joseph Eichler in the city of Orange. The 140 Eichler houses in Fairhaven differ in style and were built according to six different floor plans designed by two of Eichler’s most important architectural firms, Jones and Emmons and Anshen and Allen.

There is now a modern four bedroom, two bathroom apartment that has been restored as “original”. Vintage features include Filipino mahogany paneling throughout the house, original kitchen countertops, original Thermador hob and oven. Updates include new cork floors, tiles, appliances, landscaping, and a new water heater. On a 9,400-square-foot lot, the property is listed by Amy Vandermeulen at a price of $ 1.029 million.
